Exploring the Benefits of Robotic Surgery

Exploring the Benefits of Robotic Surgery

Sometimes women’s health requires surgery as a necessary step for improving quality of life. If you develop a condition that cannot be treated with medication or general medical appointments, your Mobile Ob-Gyn physician might suggest minimally invasive robotic surgery to address gynecological issues. Robotic surgery treats many conditions like uterine prolapse, cervical and uterine cancer, uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis. While the term “robotic” could sound daunting, this type of surgery is especially beneficial because it provides smaller incisions, better precision, and faster recovery times.

Robotic Assisted Surgeries

It is important to know that your surgeon always has your best interest in mind when planning any type of surgical procedure. During robotic-assisted surgeries, the physician works through a console to operate the surgical instrument. At Mobile Ob-Gyn, we utilize top of the line Da Vinci systems instruments. This system translates the intricate hand motions of your surgeon in real-time, moving its instruments in the exact way it is commanded by the physician, but with a greater range of motion than the human wrist. Additionally, incisions are smaller due to this system’s ability to provide enlarged 3D images of the surgical area. These enhanced images assist with precision efforts.

During traditional laparoscopic surgeries, a video camera enters several incisions via telescope. A screen projects internal images that the surgeon uses for direction. With robot-assisted surgery, incisions are smaller and the visualization is stronger, making navigation easier during the operation. This improves safety and offers greater surgical quality.

What We Treat with Minimally Invasive Surgery

Our medical experts rely on surgery for many gynecological reasons. Below is a list of issues that we can treat using this robotic-assisted surgery:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy
  • Female Urinary Incontinence
  • Sacrocolpopexy
  • Laparoscopy
  • Infertility
  • Single Incision Hysterectomy
  • Tubal Reversal

Because incisions are so much smaller, the impact of this type of surgery is minimized. Often, patients spend less time in the hospital and recover much faster than they would after average laparoscopic surgery. Many women report much less pain following robotic-assisted surgeries, which means shorter recovery time and typically a faster return to normal activities. This can positively impact a woman’s quality of life by allowing her to get back to doing the things she enjoys.

Physicians You Can Trust

Mobile Ob-Gyn takes your health seriously. Patients are the top priority, and we value the trust that you need during surgical procedures. We understand that this can be a vulnerable time for the women we serve. We offer comfort and honesty to ensure that you are kept in the know about your surgical needs and the details of your operation.

Our physicians take pride in the technological advances of robotic surgeries. The same trust that you place in your surgeon, your Mobile Ob-Gyn surgeon places in the da Vinci systems. The benefits of robotic-assisted surgeries are proven, and we only rely on the best of the best instruments to facilitate your healthcare needs.

Keeping Up with Your Cervical Health

Keeping Up with Your Cervical Health

A year often feels like just the blink of an eye. Life’s little details can change drastically in this window of time, leaving you surprised that a whole year has flown by and a new list of circumstances has evolved. With so much movement and distraction, you might place important considerations, like an overdue ob-gyn visit, on the backburner. This could be problematic because your annual appointment might signal a need for a Pap smear, also known as a Pap test. This test is key in determining certain cervical health conditions that might have developed in the midst of your busy 365 days.

Pap smears detect abnormal cells in your cervix. These abnormal cells indicate a potential health problem and allow your health professional to explore all options. Our Mobile Ob-Gyn physicians want you to know just how crucial the Pap test could be for you.

A Pap Can Save Your Life

Pap smears do not exactly detect cervical cancer. Instead, they recognize the abnormal cells that usually indicate potential cancer. The changes in your cervical cells can appear before the cancer develops, making this the easiest stage at which to treat the threat.

Aside from just the potential for cancer, a positive Pap smear might pinpoint other health issues such as:

  • Bacterial, fungal, and viral infections
  • Inflammation
  • HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)

None of these possibilities represents guaranteed diagnoses. A positive Pap smear means you should test further by receiving a biopsy, another Pap smear, or even a colonoscopy. Abnormal Pap tests are really common, with only a small percentage of women being diagnosed with cervical cancer as a result.

When to Get a Pap Smear

While recent studies show that women only need a Pap smear every three years, some women still need to have these tests annually. It is vital to check with your doctor and tailor those yearly appointments to your specific health needs. Pap tests should start by the age of 21 and continue until at least the age of 65. If your test returns with abnormal results, or if there are other risk factors at play, you will need more frequent screenings.

After the age of 30, your doctor might suggest what is known as co-testing. This would include having a Pap test along with a separate HPV screening.

Overall Benefits of Pap Smears

With the primary benefit being that your life could be saved, regular Pap tests have other benefits including:

  • Reducing anxiety
  • Finding hints of cancer before you have symptoms
  • Diagnosing cancer in its earliest stage

Will It Hurt?

While receiving a Pap smear might be uncomfortable, it should not be painful. Confide in your health care provider if you experience any anxiety or pain during the exam. It is also necessary to let your doctor know if you have never had a Pap smear so they can guide you through the exam and let you know exactly what to expect.

At Mobile Ob-Gyn, we work hard to stand at the forefront of your health concerns. Our goal is to find and alleviate risks to your wellbeing. Let our well-qualified team lead you through the process of these necessary tests so that worry, and not your annual appointment, gets placed on the backburner. Everything You Need to Know about Prenatal Screenings

Everything You Need to Know about Prenatal Screenings

Pregnancy is both a thrilling and daunting time for parents-to-be. Questions about baby names, crib assembly, and overall safety emerge from the start. Among so many choices and decisions, another concern that often lingers during pregnancy is, "Is my baby healthy?" To assist with this question, your doctor might suggest prenatal screening. If you’re on the fence about whether or not this suggestion could benefit you and your baby, Mobile Ob-Gyn wants you to have all of the facts.

Here are some considerations we urge you to consider when it comes to prenatal screenings:

Optional Testing Available

If you want an authentic view of your baby's development, prenatal screening is a beneficial path. This optional testing provides valuable awareness to both you and your medical provider.

These screenings might catch pregnancy complications or genetic conditions that would otherwise go undetected. In turn, you and your ob-gyn or other obstetrics provider will have a firmer outlook on how to manage your pregnancy moving forward. Other benefits of this testing include pertinent care strategies for the fetus or affected newborns, your personal reassurance if results are normal, and the discovery of disorders at a stage when prenatal care can help.

These tests generally provide the probability or likelihood of a condition. Mobile Ob-Gyn is comprised of knowledgeable, compassionate physicians and staff who can help you navigate your options and guide you through the process.

First Trimester Screening

Carrier Screening

This test is performed on parents (or those who want to become parents) using blood or a cheek swab. Its goal is to determine whether a parent carries a gene for disorders that are commonly inherited.

Ultrasound

An ultrasound is used to verify how far along you are in the pregnancy, the position and size of your baby, and as a means of discovering any irregularities with your baby’s organ development and bone growth. This is done by using soundwaves to produce an image of your baby in the uterus.

One particular ultrasound, the nuchal translucency ultrasound, is used to determine how much fluid has accumulated at the back of your baby’s neck. If excessive fluid is present, it can be an indicator of Down syndrome, but this is not a certainty. Knowledge is power, especially in pregnancy. Knowing as much as possible at this stage via these important screenings ensures you and your baby receive the best care possible.

Second Trimester Screening

Blood Test

Given between 15 and 22 weeks, the “quad” blood test measures different substance levels in your blood. The results could show whether or not you are at an increased risk of having a child with Down syndrome, trisomy 18, neural tube defects, or abdominal wall defects.

Ultrasound

This ultrasound is usually given between 18 and 22 weeks of your pregnancy. This time, the ultrasound is used to check for any major defects in your baby’s limbs, abdomen, spine, heart, and brain.

Who Should Consider Prenatal Screenings?

The importance of these tests is amplified for a certain portion of the population. Some pregnancies carry a higher risk of birth defects or genetic problems. This can be the case if you’ve experienced one or more of the following:

  • Had a previous miscarriage.

  • Experienced a prior stillbirth.

  • Had a premature baby in the past.

  • Previously had a baby with a birth defect.

  • Have a genetic disorder that tends to run in your or your spouse’s family.

  • Have diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune disorders, or frequent seizures.

  • Have had preeclampsia during other pregnancies.

  • Have had gestational diabetes during other pregnancies.

  • Are the maternal parent aged 35 or older.

  • Are the paternal parent aged 40 or older.

Other factors contribute to a higher recommendation for these screenings. It’s best to talk to your health care provider and determine which avenue aligns with your pregnancy needs. Our physicians take a compassionate, personal approach to your prenatal experience. We seek to ensure you receive expert, considerate care complete with all the reassurance you may need as you move through your pregnancy.

Results

While screenings provide important health information, it’s worth noting that you should always lean on your physician for help interpreting the results. Your doctor is the best point of contact for understanding and conveying the testing conclusions.

How to Choose the Right Ob-Gyn for You: Things to Consider

As a woman, the relationship you have with your ob-gyn is a significant one throughout the course of your life. From yearly pap smears, fertility planning, and eventually mammograms, you want these deeply personal examinations and conversations surrounding your health and to be experienced with a professional you know, like, and trust. In fact, during pregnancy, your OB plays almost as significant a role as the father of your child with visits going from every four weeks to two weeks and even as frequently as once a week at the end of your pregnancy! That’s a lot of time to spend with your doctor—don’t you want to make sure it’s a good fit? When you’re seeing a physician through such pivotal moments in your life, you certainly want one that understands you and your individual needs.

At Mobile Ob-Gyn, we believe in taking a comprehensive approach to women’s healthcare. We work hard to provide convenient, considerate care for every patient, every visit—even offering same-day appointments. All you as the patient must do is ask. Whatever your concerns may be, when it comes to finding the ob-gyn of your dreams, no need is too small to take into consideration.

Here are a few other reasons Mobile Ob-Gyn offers the kind of care you deserve:

The Qualities You Want in a Doctor

Narrowing down your search for an ob-gyn might be as simple as finding out who offers the services you actually need. Mobile Ob-Gyn believes in being there for patients through every step of their journey as women. From adolescence to adulthood, through childbearing years, and into menopause and beyond, we are devoted to offering services that meet your lifelong needs. Mobile Ob-Gyn offers the convenience and privacy of a wide variety of diagnostic and treatment services in one location. We use the latest surgical techniques and cutting-edge equipment to provide minimally invasive surgery for a variety of gynecological issues. At our office, in-house procedures include single-incision hysterectomies, laparoscopy, tubal reversal, as well as a number of other gynecologic and obstetric screening and diagnostic procedures.

Availability

Women can feel “lost in the shuffle” as patients. They may find it’s difficult or inconvenient to get an appointment with their ob-gyn when they really need it. At Mobile Ob-Gyn, we prioritize the patient’s needs first and foremost. This means we’re proud to offer same-day appointments. We realize that not all issues can wait, and we intend to make ourselves ready for you when you need us.

Furthermore, your doctor is your doctor at Mobile Ob-Gyn. We do not rotate physicians, so when it’s time to come in for an OB visit, you’re going to be meeting with the person you know and trust who, in turn, knows you and your growing baby.

Convenience

Additionally, you’ll find practically every type of diagnostic and treatment service available right here in the office. If you’ve ever had to go to your doctor, then drive miles away to have lab work done, then drive somewhere else entirely for a scan, you know how frustrating and exhausting the whole process can be. Instead of being sent to several different places in the name of your health, we offer all the care you need under one roof. And because we have in-office lab services and technicians, you don’t have to wait weeks for important results. The following are just a few of the above-and-beyond services we provide at Mobile Ob-Gyn:

  • 3D/4D Ultrasound
  • Obstetric Ultrasound
  • Gynecologic Ultrasound
  • Gender Reveal Suite
  • Electrocardiogram
  • 3D Digital Mammography
  • Lab Work
  • Bone Density Analysis
  • Clinical Research

Experience

Mobile Ob-Gyn is proud to deliver nearly 1400 babies annually—that’s more than any other private ob-gyn practice in the region! We’ve been hard at work helping women through each stage of their lives since 1953, and we understand that individual needs of our patients evolve as they grow and change.

Our healthcare professionals have completed extensive training in obstetrics and gynecology, with many completing their education, internships, or residencies right here in Alabama. All of our doctors are active in local, state, and national medical societies and associations, and each brings their unique qualifications to the Mobile Ob-Gyn. Additionally, the compassionate physicians at our practice are committed to staying up-to-date on the latest in healthcare research and technology. The result of all of our training and knowledge is simple yet important: We provide the best possible care for every patient, every time, at every age.

Positive Reviews

Once you’ve narrowed down what’s most important to you, you can cross-reference those needs with what’s offered at your potential ob-gyn’s office. Then, perhaps the best way to determine if the doctor you’re considering is really the right one for you is to take to the internet. After all, people who leave online reviews—whether positive or negative—had an impactful enough experience to take the time to detail it for an entire online community. We’re honored to say that Mobile Ob-Gyn’s Google and Facebook reviews are among the highest for practices in the area, and we regularly receive recommendations from our patients. Recent reviews have noted that our bedside manner is excellent, we’re dedicated to providing comfort no matter the type of visit, and our physicians really take the time to answer any questions from patients and talk with them throughout their appointment.
